For such a time as this …

The Charlotte community has learned of and directly experienced increased immigration enforcement in the Charlotte area this weekend, leaving many of our immigrant neighbors fearful and uncertain. Reports indicate that 160 individuals were detained this past weekend. While addressing serious crimes is necessary, enforcement that harms families and communities is neither just nor humane.

As followers of Christ, we affirm that every person is created in the image of God (Genesis 1). Scripture calls us to welcome the stranger (Leviticus 19:33–34) and reminds us that in doing so, we welcome Christ himself (Matthew 25). Immigration policy must reflect dignity, transparency, and compassion.

When actions disrupt lives and sow fear, we are called to respond with solidarity, courage, and love—not violence (Matthew 5:38–48). This is a moment to embody the peaceable kingdom (Isaiah 11) and live “a more excellent way” (1 Corinthians 13).

We invite you to join us in prayer: for protection and peace for immigrant families, wisdom for community leaders, our LHCC staff and courage for communities to act with justice and mercy. Perhaps we are called for such a time as this (Esther 4:14)—to stand together in faith, hope, and love.

Prayer:
God of mercy and justice, hear the cries of those who are afraid. Shelter the vulnerable, guide those in authority toward compassion, and strengthen us to be instruments of peace. Teach us to love as You love, and to welcome as You welcome. We pray for an amicable resolution, and a much needed pathway to citizenship for hard working immigration families. In Christ’s name, Amen.
