Lessons from a Missionary Veteran

We wish all veterans a Happy Memorial Day and fondly remember all those who have paid the ultimate price to protect our nation and fight for our freedom. Thank you and God bless you.

I have had the distinct pleasure of meeting hundreds of inspirational mentors and fellow travelers on my 10-year stint on the local Charlotte mission field. One of these fine gentlemen is celebrating 25 years of doing ministry this week, having impacted many, both locally and across the globe. He is an ardent networker, connector, and loyal supporter of the mission of LHCC. Here are the three biblical truths and practical advice he recently shared with me.

Lesson 1: Never be satisfied until you settle where the Lord would have you serve. Much like Abram’s father Terah, and Abraham himself, both were called out of a distant land of Ur of the Chaldeans and Haran en route to Canaan and the Promised Land. Genesis 11 & 12

Lesson 2: There is always energy to take one next step. Like Elisha instructing King Joash, depend on God’s deliverance and say yes to as much as possible, by depending on God to deliver the desired result, in His perfect timing. 2 Kings 13:14-17.

Lesson 3: There is always room for one more. I was challenged to contemplate the following: “What can I do to have an impact on just one more soul?” The scenario that was shared was to make place for an extra seat at the table. It’s an invitation and reminder to all to be thinking about adding one more person who needs fellowship and encouragement.

I am grateful and blessed to know this fine wise man, who loves the Lord and will be celebrating his retirement this week. However, based on what I’ve learned during my recent extended breakfast meeting; retirement will certainly not define him. He will likely continue to make room for one more, to invite one more to the mission field and be opportunistic about being inclusive of those on the fringes who need a hand up and surely a little encouragement.
