My sabbatical … and what I learned

A Sabbatical is an extended period away from work. It was a time to reflect on my life, my vocation, and my goals. It was also a time to reset and reflect on making positive changes.

My recent sabbatical was book-ended by a mission trip to Colombia, South America and backwoods camping trip in Colorado. It was a valuable time to relax and recharge. I did take some time for myself and to do the things that I truly enjoy.

Here is a summary of what I learned during my 30-day sabbatical:

  • The importance of rest and relaxation. It gave me time to truly relax and de-stress. I did a lot of reading, praying, daily exercise, and did take time for much needed rest.

  • The importance of pursuing my passions. My sabbatical was a great time to travel, learn new skills, rekindle new pastimes like hiking, cycling, and appreciating the beauty of God’s creation and the great outdoors.

  • It was good to take a break after ten years of ministry, and especially after helping with the 11th year of LHCC summer camps this past July. I also recognized the importance of leadership, and ability to delegate to competent staff who made my vocation easier, as well as ease the anxiety over succession planning in the future.

  • The book that I enjoyed most was Reactivity by Paul David Tripp. The book of the bible I enjoyed most was Philippians, the theme of our devotions in Colombia.

My sabbatical was a relaxing and transformative experience that helped me reflect on where I am in life. It fueled spiritual growth and gave me a desire to keep learning across many aspects of my vocation. Thank you to the LHCC Board for providing this gift and to the staff who continued the summer ministry work while I was away.

Grateful and blessed,

Brent Morris
