Intern Spotlight and Reflection

Over the past three years LHCC has had three interns from Queens University and the Queens Women’s Rugby Team. They all started out volunteering with us in some capacity and then were able to transition into interns. We have had stellar interns from Queens and we are looking forward to having more in the upcoming years. Ceci has been an absolute delight to have at our organization. She started LHCC’s first book club and has formed strong bonds with the LHCC kids and their families. She completed every task with a smile and contributed greatly to our program. It is bittersweet to see her graduate, but we are excited for her next chapter! Ceci wrote a reflection of her time with us, please read her blog below and enjoy!

My name is Ceci Calhoun, and I interned at LHCC for the spring semester through Queens University of Charlotte. I am a senior studying international studies and Spanish. One aspect of international studies that draws my attention is the impact of cultures and history on how countries and peoples interact. With this interest comes a love of learning and connecting with distinct cultures. Understanding all of these intricacies and intersections in our communities in Charlotte has drawn me to non-profit community work. LHCC has been a great experience for me to apply what I have learned in my time at Queens, as well as form connections with the non-profit community and the Hispanic community of Charlotte.

My internship goals were to get more comfortable in leadership positions, learn more about the non-profit sector, and add to my professional experience before graduating. I felt connected to the kids and parents at LHCC, which made my experience there run smoother. I was able to be more personal in helping them because I spent time getting to know them. It was great to work together with the staff. I felt valued and a part of the team. I value the advice and help that they gave me and the opportunities to see more of the behind-the-scenes action of LHCC and the non-profit world.

I started a book club during my time at LHCC and helped start a grades tracker to analyze the kids' progress and how best to assist each one. The book club has been a great experience for me. I love sharing my love of reading, and I hope that those who chose to join me continue reading and connecting with others’ stories. I had a great time connecting with them in a more personal way. Bringing my experiences to this organization and gaining new ones has and will help me through my future career and volunteer experience.
