Extravagant Love

I’ve recently started reading The Whole Language by Gregory Boyle. I picked it up from the book crate at summer camp because the colorful cover caught my eye. As I dig into Father Boyle’s words, I’m grateful for his message about the extravagant tenderness of God—for me and for everyone touched by LHCC.

Father Boyle is a Jesuit Catholic priest who has, for decades, worked with gang members and former prisoners. Together they have built Homeboy Industries, providing rehabilitation, employment, and reentry in a faith filled and supportive environment. In this book, he introduces his readers to the connection and tenderness that come first from God and are shared by people growing in God’s way.

Boyle writes of how we receive and share God’s care, “We don’t measure up to this God; we just show up. We allow this Tender One to fill us extravagantly, then we go into the world and speak the whole language of it, unrestricted, openhearted, and loyally dedicated to its entirety.”

I love the image of a God who fills us to overflowing with deep and abiding love and equips us to love that way in the world. At LHCC, our mission is to equip and empower our neighbors with scholastic, social, and spiritual support. God offers care and compassion that we experience in devotions, in parent conversations, in nurses caring for families through difficult diagnoses, and in so many other moments. Then we share that love. Together at LHCC, in our families, in schools, at work and in the community.

You are always welcome. To meet God’s extravagant love among the people of LHCC. And to share that love wherever life takes you.
