Volunteers

Volunteers are the mainstay of our services and are the direct beneficiaries of many of the accomplishments as we interact directly with the children we choose to serve …

“It was my pleasure to help out last evening! I love being with {my tutored grade 3 student}. She lights up my mind.”                                                                                                                                                              Volunteer at our South-side Study buddies program ~ September 2017

“He {my tutored grade 3 student} worked hard today, but he needs some more help with English, which I am glad to provide. Working with the kids is always a bright spot in my week. {names omitted to protect privacy}                                       HOC Volunteer at our South-side Study buddies program ~ September 2017

“She {my tutored grade 3 student} is an excellent reader, but stopping her every page or so to discuss comprehension was a great add-on to helping her. After I did that a couple of times, she became much more intentional in how she read. This is a great volunteer opportunity for me as well”

HOC Volunteer at our South-side Study buddies program ~ June 2017

“I had a great evening with {name, 3rd grade} and we spent time on review and practice as she had no homework. She has come light years since August! I am especially pleased at how well she can now tell time and do word problems involving time”                       Forest Hill Church Volunteer at our South-side program ~ May 2017

“I enjoy the tutoring and look forward to continuing to work with theses wonderful children. {name, 4th grade} and {name, 3rd grade} have both been a joy to work with”  {names omitted to protect privacy}                                                                    Volunteer at our South-side Study buddies program ~ May 2017

“I wanted to thank you again for allowing me to come visit LHCC this past week! You’re running an incredible organization and really helping to change and shape those children.”

Prospective volunteer at our South-side Study buddies program ~ April 2017

“I just love the opportunity to serve in the community by helping students who are so willing to learn! They are so much fun. Since I have a background in math, it is a great opportunity to share those skills. I feel like I am making a difference because these kids need extra encouragement and someone to believe in them!”

Tutoring volunteer at South-side location ~ January 2017

“I was not sure what to expect when I went to check out the after-school program at the one of the learning centers. Was it going to be a safe place to hang out and will I have something to do. Well I was very pleasantly surprised. Firstly Ms. Mae, the resident chaplain was very organized and the children really respected her leadership. There were resident parents there to assist as well. I felt very comfortable sitting with the young children and helping them with their homework. I really enjoyed it. I will definitely be going back to serve again.”

Elementary School volunteer at Silverstone Apartments ~ November 2015

“I have been very blessed in many aspects of my life. I volunteer at LHCC on a weekly basis because I strongly believe it is our mission in life to give back and our obligation to try to provide everybody with the same opportunities. These are very beautiful and bright kids, there is no better feeling than seeing them coming to you to proudly show you their grades and improvements on their report cards, but it is not all about grades, it is also about people believing in them and telling them they can do it. Sometimes that is all it takes to make a big difference …”
